Despite All Disparity, Music Thrives in the Congo

The Symphonic Orchestra Kimbanguiste is magnificently the world’s only all-black orchestra.

The Concerto, as Messy Nessy writes, “is a 200-strong band of classical musicians who come together against all odds, to make music in a country where the average monthly income wouldn’t be enough to buy a used violin. The musicians practice on their donated, salvaged and even homemade instruments at a demanding six rehearsals a week inside a warehouse in Kinshasa. Electricity often cuts out but the musicians play on.”
